Glitch Effects Shouldn't Require 3 Separate Plugins
Creating convincing glitch effects in VEGAS Pro has always been a challenge. The built-in tools offer no dedicated glitch capabilities, and the alternatives are fragmented:
- After Effects ecosystem — plugins like Data Glitch 2, Separate RGB, and Bad TV cost $99+ combined and don't support OFX hosts
- Enterprise suites — Boris Continuum ($970+) or Sapphire ($1,650+) include glitch tools buried among 300 other effects
- Manual workaround — stacking multiple native effects, manually keyframing randomness, rendering test after test
DataStorm solves this in one plugin. Ten independent glitch modules, each with its own controls, combined with global intensity and mix sliders. Apply it as a Video Event FX and see the result in your Preview window immediately.
Organized Controls for Every Module
All 10 modules are grouped logically in the standard VEGAS Pro FX panel. Enable or disable each module independently, adjust parameters in real time, and switch between 20 presets with a single click.

Every Glitch Effect You Need — In One Plugin
Each module simulates a different type of digital or analog signal corruption. Combine them freely for unique, organic results.
Wave Distortion
Analog signal wave distortion. Sine-wave horizontal displacement with rotation angle, multi-octave noise modulation, V-Sync rolling, H-Hold skipping, barrel distortion, and adjustable border width. Per-module Pulse, Speed, and Random controls.
Block Displacement
MPEG-style block artifacts with shaped edges. Horizontal bands shift randomly with controllable size, displacement, threshold, probability, direction, and color tinting. Stepped block shapes and three edge modes: Clamp, Wrap, Mirror.
Pixel Stretch
Simulates buffer underrun by stretching edge pixels across the frame. Control stretch length, direction (Left / Right / Both), threshold, and probability per scanline.
Data Corrupt
Raw data corruption simulation. Five modes: Shift, Replace, Invert, Quantize, Displace. Controllable block size, displacement, color tinting (Random/Custom), and edge handling (Clamp, Wrap, Mirror).
Color Bleed
Simulates chroma bleeding from analog video signals. Color smears in a chosen direction (Left, Right, Up, Down) with adjustable length, decay, and brightness threshold. Per-module Target with Glitch Only mode.
Scale
Zoom/scale from anchor point. Auto or Manual control with intensity, pulse, speed, and randomness. Three edge modes (Clamp, Wrap, Mirror) and per-module Target (Global, Alpha Only, Glitch Only).
RGB Split
Chromatic aberration with independent R/G/B channel offsets. Three modes: Linear, Radial, and Angle. Animated drift with adjustable frequency, pulse, edge boost, and speed controls.
Digital Noise
Random pixel noise with variable scale, freeze-block regions, and three color modes (Mono, Color, Invert). Three blend modes: Normal, Screen, Add. Block aspect ratio control.
Scanlines
Classic CRT/interlace scanline overlay. Adjustable count, thickness, opacity, color, offset, animated scrolling speed, and random flicker for authentic analog look.
Light
Dynamic brightness operator. Brighten, Darken, or Both with Auto or Manual control. Adjustable intensity, pulse, speed, and randomness. Color tinting with Random/Custom modes and adjustable color mix.

Master Your Glitch Intensity
DataStorm provides powerful global controls that affect all 10 modules simultaneously:
- Global Intensity — scales the strength of every enabled module from 0% to 100% with a single slider
- Mix with Original — blend the glitched result with your clean footage for any opacity level
- Animation Speed — controls how fast all time-based randomness evolves (0 = frozen, 10 = rapid)
- Time Control — override time-based animation with a manual phase value, perfect for still images or precise keyframe control
- Master Seed — change the random pattern while keeping all other settings identical
- Global Pulse — periodic rhythmic pulsing of all glitch effects simultaneously, with adjustable speed
- Global Random — per-frame random variation of overall glitch intensity for organic, unpredictable results
Each module also has its own per-module Target option with three modes: Global (full frame), Alpha Only (content only), and Glitch Only (effect areas only). Several modules also include dedicated Pulse, Speed, and Random controls for independent animation.
Fun Facts About Glitch Art & DataStorm
The technology and history behind the effects you use every day.
Real VHS Physics
Wave Distortion's V-Sync and H-Hold parameters recreate the actual failure modes of analog CRT television. V-Sync rolling happened when the vertical synchronization pulse was lost, causing the picture to scroll endlessly — exactly what the V-Sync Amount slider simulates.
10120 Combinations
With 153 parameters, each accepting hundreds of values, the number of unique looks DataStorm can produce exceeds 10120 — more than the estimated number of atoms in the observable universe (approximately 1080). You will literally never run out of unique glitch looks.
GPU = 50× Faster
DataStorm's OpenCL renderer processes all 10 modules on the GPU in a single pass. On a mid-range GPU, a 1080p frame renders in under 2ms — roughly 50× faster than the CPU fallback. That's real-time preview at 60fps even with every module enabled.
BPM-Synced Glitches
The Global Pulse parameter oscillates at a regular frequency, which means you can match it to your music's BPM. At Animation Speed 5.0 with Pulse at 50%, glitch hits land roughly on every beat of a 120 BPM track — perfect for music videos.
NTSC Color Science
Color Bleed simulates a real artifact from NTSC analog television, where the limited 3.58 MHz chroma bandwidth caused color information to smear horizontally. DataStorm faithfully recreates this with a brightness-threshold decay algorithm.
Glitch Art Movement
Glitch aesthetics emerged as a recognized art movement in the early 2000s. Pioneer artists like Rosa Menkman and Nick Briz intentionally corrupted digital files to reveal the hidden language of technology — the same philosophy behind DataStorm's Data Corrupt module.
Tips & Workflow for Better Glitch Effects
Techniques used by professional editors to get the most out of DataStorm.
The 3-Module Rule
Start with just 2–3 modules instead of enabling all 10. A combination like Wave Distortion + Block Displacement + Scanlines already delivers a convincing retro look. Add more modules only when you want to increase complexity.
Glitch Only Chaining
Set Color Bleed's Target to "Glitch Only" so that color smears only appear on areas already displaced by Block Displacement or Data Corrupt. This keeps your clean areas pristine while intensifying the glitched regions.
Keyframe the Mix Slider
Animate Mix with Original from 100% → 0% → 100% over a few frames to create a sudden glitch "hit" that pops in and out. This is the go-to technique for transition-style glitch effects without cutting the clip.
Freeze + Burst Technique
Set Animation Speed to 0 to freeze the glitch pattern, then keyframe it to 8–10 for a single-frame burst. The result: static tension followed by explosive chaos — perfect for horror or thriller edits.
Preset as Starting Point
Apply a preset like CyberPunk or VHS Playback, then tweak 2–3 parameters to make it your own. This is faster than building from scratch and ensures a balanced starting look across all modules.
Layer Two Instances
Apply DataStorm twice on the same clip: first instance for subtle base texture (low Intensity, Wave Distortion + Scanlines + Noise), second instance for dramatic hits (high Intensity, Block + Corrupt + RGB Split with keyframed Mix).
Master Seed for Variations
Found a look you love but need variations? Change only Master Seed to get a completely different random pattern while keeping every other parameter identical. Great for generating multiple versions of the same style.
Global Intensity as Safety Net
When experimenting with extreme settings, keep Global Intensity at 30–50% first. Once you're happy with the character of the effect, gradually increase it. This prevents accidentally nuking your footage quality.
"The best glitch effects feel intentional, not accidental. Use DataStorm's Mix and Intensity controls to find the sweet spot where the glitch enhances the story without overpowering it."
Frequently Asked Questions
DataStorm works with VEGAS Pro 15 and all later versions, including VEGAS Pro 22 and 2026. It is a standard OFX 1.4 plugin and should also work in any other OFX-compatible host.
DataStorm uses OpenCL for GPU acceleration, which is supported by most modern GPUs from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. If no compatible GPU is detected, the plugin automatically falls back to a multi-threaded CPU renderer — no manual configuration is needed.
Yes. Each of the 10 modules has its own Enable/Disable toggle. You can use just RGB Split, just Scanlines, just Wave Distortion, or any combination. The presets configure multiple modules at once, but you can always turn individual modules on or off afterward.
Yes. Use the "Time Control" parameter to manually set the animation phase for still images, or set "Animation Speed" to 0 to freeze the glitch pattern at the current state.
DataStorm combines the functionality of Data Glitch 2, Separate RGB, and Bad TV (which cost $99+ as a bundle in After Effects) into a single OFX plugin with GPU acceleration. Plus, it adds Wave Distortion, Pixel Stretch, Color Bleed, Data Corrupt, Light, and Scale modules that those plugins don't offer.
All parameters are keyframeable in VEGAS Pro using the standard envelope system. You can animate intensity, module amounts, seeds, speeds — everything. This allows you to create builds, transitions, and precisely timed glitch hits.
Edge Mode controls what happens when displaced pixels go beyond the frame boundary. Clamp repeats the edge pixel, Wrap tiles the image from the opposite side, and Mirror reflects the image at the boundary. Each creates a different visual effect.
